Golden Syrup

August 31, 2014 | 37 comments

Can somebody tell me why in the world we don’t have golden syrup in the US?? I mean you probs could find it if you looked hard enough or ordered it from online, but they should seriously sell it regularly here!!

Anyone care to enlighten me??

{If you’ve been reading SwS for a long time, you’ve probably seen this before}

Golden syrup is so golden and I really have no idea what in the world it’s supposed to taste like. But after searching it up a few times, reading a few articles, I found out that it’s just sugar solution treated with acid! AKA lemon juice here we come!

Um. Okay. So go make this right now because it keeps for a really long time and mooncakes are coming next week and you need this. Plus it’s great on pancakes.

Golden Syrup
3 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 lemon cut into quarters

Squeeze the juice of the lemon quarters into a pot. Add the peels too. Mix in the rest of the ingredients and boil for about 30 minutes with the lid on.

Pour into a canning jar while still hot.

Wow, I had no idea you could make your own golden syrup! You can get it here in Canada, because we have some British foods in our grocery stores, but it can be hard to find.

Would never have thought of golden syrup as a speciality item in the grocery store! So easy to get here in Australia. The things you learn in blog land…

Is it only America??? Uggg… America, why can’t ye be normal? Like having a metric system instead of this thing with cups, pounds, inches, and fahrenheit?

I live in Australia and can get golden syrup – couldn’t make ANZAC biscuits without it. Imagine all the US items we can’t get like graham crackers. :)

Hahaha, all the things we take for granted. In China most households didn’t have ovens… And the ones they sold were something like a toaster oven. πŸ˜€

I’ve managed to find golden syrup here in Canada, it tastes amazing! I had to go on a mission to find it so I could make my Aussie fiance his beloved ANZAC cookies. Have you ever tried them? Great use for Golden syrup!

Yes, of course! There are a few kinds that don’t use it. But out of the traditional ones, one of them uses it (Cantonese) and the other doesn’t and my mom told me the Cantonese one tasted the best. Always trust mom!

Well, a year later and an inventive mind making this a useless comment, I felt the same as you did until I found Lyle’s Golden Syrup available on Amazon and was so stunned I ordered 8 cans. I like it that I can make my own now, though. Thank you!
